Nourish to Flourish: Integrating Ancient Wisdom in Today's World
Feeding a family and nourishing one are not the same thing. We said it plainly on this episode: it is not just about feeding families, but nourishing them. That one distinction reframes almost everything about how a household runs.
My co-host Dr. Keith Somers, a Pittsburgh pediatrician, and I spent this conversation on Illuminating Being inside a framework called the evolved nest. It is rooted in ancient wisdom, and it centers communal living and shared caregiving, physical closeness, and real community support. I talked about the network of caregivers around my own family, and the piece I think matters most: it is not all familial. As a mother of six, I can tell you that network is not decoration. It is load-bearing.
From there we went to simplicity, because modern parenting is drowning in noise. Keith's version is two words: less is more. Slow down, be present, make a safe space for open dialogue, and stop confusing material excess with care. My version is that it is about centering your own internal conversations on what actually matters. Presence over presents. The kids remember who showed up, not what showed up.
We also talked about weaving indigenous wisdom into contemporary parenting, embracing communal values and the sense that we are all connected, so families can grow individually and together. Keith put it in a way I keep replaying: our spirit, our wellbeing has to be reinforced by the ways we see the world and connect with people. Nourishing the body is the easy half. The soul is the long game.
And then, words. I shared a conversation I had with one of my kids that reminded me how much hangs on whether we actually listen. Your words matter, and they land, for better or worse. There is no throwaway sentence with a child.

So here is the landing. Look at your own nest this week and ask where it needs more care or support. Then make one small shift in your daily rhythm, one slower dinner, one real conversation, one moment of presence you would normally rush past. That is how you integrate what we have forgotten with where we are now. You can listen to the full episode wherever you get Illuminating Being.
