The Ripple Effect: How Kindness Transforms Lives

December 26, 2025

Kindness is not politeness. Politeness is a manner. Kindness is a decision, to actually notice someone, choose compassion, and do something about it. And it ripples out a lot farther than the moment it happens in.

That is where Keith and I started this conversation on Illuminating Being. My co-host Dr. Keith Somers, a Pittsburgh pediatrician, and I wanted to get underneath the greeting-card version of kindness and look at how it actually works, in our homes and, just as much, in our professional lives. Kindness and belonging are wired together. You cannot have one without the other for long.

Keith sees this daily in pediatrics. Kindness is how trust gets built with patients and their families, and it means meeting children where they are, physically and emotionally, so the care actually reaches them. The same logic runs through parenting. Kids do not learn kindness from lectures. They learn it from watching us, and what they see shapes their confidence, their emotional growth, and their sense of who they are.

Then we took it to work, because kindness is not soft there either. Kindness is what creates psychological safety, and psychological safety is where creativity and innovation actually come from. Nobody floats a half-formed idea in a room where people get punished for it. And the most underrated form of workplace kindness is intentional listening, being fully present and open instead of rehearsing your reply. I have sat in enough meetings to know the rarest resource in the room is someone actually listening. It changes conversations. It changes decisions.

We closed with a shared call to action, and I will pass it straight to you. Practice kindness in the ordinary interactions, the checkout line, the hallway, the dinner table, and trust the ripple. Kindness is not just an individual choice. Done consistently, it becomes a collective movement. So here is your rep for tomorrow: pick one conversation and give it your full attention. No phone, no drafting your response while they talk. That is kindness in its work clothes. For more conversations like this one, subscribe to Illuminating Being.
