The Power of Vulnerability: Embracing Authenticity in Our Lives
When was the last time you let someone see you before you had it all figured out? Most of us are trained to lead with strength and polish. In this episode, Keith and I spent an hour taking that training apart.
My co-host Dr. Keith Somers, a Pittsburgh pediatrician, and I built the conversation on Brene Brown's work and our own lived experience. Her framing is the one I keep coming back to: vulnerability is not weakness. It is the courage to show up and be seen when you cannot control the outcome. That openness is what makes room for joy, creativity, and real connection. It also asks something of you, namely self-awareness and a decent amount of self-compassion.
We got practical about what the practice actually looks like. It starts with being honest with yourself about what you are feeling, which is harder than it sounds. From there, it is about building spaces, at home and at work, where people can say the true thing without flinching. It is about reminding yourself that you are enough and letting go of the pressure to be perfect. And it is about sharing what you are carrying with people you trust, because that is how relationships get deeper instead of just longer.
What surprised me most when I started doing this in my professional life is that it worked. Being open built stronger, more supportive working relationships than polish ever did. Keith says it plainly: vulnerability is not a weakness, it is a strength that fosters growth and resilience. Armor keeps people out. That is the whole problem with armor.
Neither of us is pretending this is a box you check once. It is a lifelong practice of courage, presence, and self-awareness, and part of the practice is remembering it is okay to ask for help. None of us is actually alone in this, even when it feels that way. So here is the assignment for the week: tell one trusted person one true thing you have been carrying by yourself. That is it. That is the whole rep. And if you want to keep walking this out with us, subscribe to Illuminating Being.
