Intentional Living: The Art of Being Real

October 30, 2025

Authenticity gets thrown around like a buzzword, which is a shame, because underneath the branding it is one of the harder practices I know. Being real is not a personality trait. It is a daily choice to show up without the armor.

On this episode of Illuminating Being, my co-host Dr. Keith Somers, a Pittsburgh pediatrician, and I dug into what intentional living actually asks of us. I have been leaning on Brene Brown's work on wholehearted living, and the honest answer is that it is a constant practice. Letting go of what everyone else expects. Showing up as my truest self, even on the days that self is tired.

Keith took it a step further: authenticity is not only about you. It is about creating spaces where genuine connection can happen and where other people feel safe enough to be real too. That lands differently coming from someone who spends his days with kids and worried parents.

We also talked about what intentional living costs. It takes courage and self-awareness to line your daily choices up with what actually matters, and most of us never stop to check the alignment. For me, journaling is how I find my way back to my North Star when the calendar starts running me instead of the other way around. Keith made the point that clarity of intention shapes how you show up in every room you walk into.

Then there is language. I use visual metaphors constantly in my work; it is the engineer in me, always hunting for the picture that makes a complicated idea land. Keith reminded us that words carry real power. They either deepen understanding or create distance. There is no neutral.

Here is where we landed: authenticity is not just a personal journey, it is a communal one. When you show up as your whole self, you hand everyone else in the room permission to do the same. In a culture that rewards performance, that is not a small thing. So try it this week. Pick one room where you usually perform and just be real in it instead. And if the conversation resonates, you can find Illuminating Being on Spotify.
